Title: Reducible and Toroidal Handle Additions
Abstract: Let be a compact connected orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold and
be a boundary component of
with genus at least two. A slope on
is an isotopy class of essential simple closed curves on
. Suppose
and
are 3-manifolds obtained by doing 2-handle additions on
along two separating slopes
and
on
, respectively. The distance between two slopes
and
on
, denoted by
, is the minimal geometric intersection number among all the curves representing the slopes. In this talk I will estimate
by combinatorial methods when
is toroidal and
is reducible or toroidal.
